Madge Bishop is returning to 'Neighbours' as a ghost.

The long-running soap opera is set to screen its last episode on 1 August after 37 years on air and although the character lost a battle with cancer back in 2001, actress Anne Charleston reportedly returned to the set to film scenes for the finale.

A source told The Sun: "There was no way that someone as iconic and legendary as Madge wasn’t going to be seen in the soap’s final ever episode. It was just about how they could have her back when her death was such a huge part of the show’s history. It’s very clever. The fans are going to get goosebumps – it’s magical."

The news comes just days after it was confirmed that Hollywood star Margot Robbie - who first found fame playing Donna Freedman on the Aussie soap from 2008 until 2011 - will also make a return for the final episode.

The 'Neighbours' Twitter account also confirmed on Saturday (23.07.22) that 'House' actor Jesse Spencer will reprise his role as Billy Kennedy and Kym Valentine will be back as his sister Libby, while Carla Bonner will make an appearance as Steph Scully and singer Delta Goodrem will be back on Ramsay Street as Nina Tucker.

They tweeted: "Surprise! You didn’t think we were done did you?!

We’re thrilled to share that Margot Robbie, Jesse Spencer, Delta Goodrem, Kym Valentine and Carla Bonner will all make an appearance in our finale! #CelebratingNeighbours (sic)"

It was previously confirmed the likes of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Guy Pearce and Natalie Bassingthwaite will be returning to Erinsborough to mark the programme's final episodes.

Back in February, Channel 5 confirmed they were axing the show and as a result, the soap was forced to shut down production due to a lack of funding..

A spokesperson said at the time: "'Neighbours' will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer. It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.

We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.

We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers."

The finale of 'Neighbours' airs on Channel 5 in the Uk on Friday 1 August.
