Iconic pop star Madonna wants Oxford-born actress Florence Pugh to play her in a new biopic.

The legendary singer-songwriter and actress is co-writing and will direct a film based on her own life story, it was announced in 2020, with the biopic reportedly nearing production.

Madge, 63, told the Associated Press: "She's definitely up there on the list, if she'll have me."

Though Florence is primarily known for her acting, she is also a singer, who performs under the name Flossie Rose.

Last year she teamed up with her brother Toby Sebastian when she recorded backing vocals for Sebastian’s single, Midnight.

Florence has been pictured at bars owned by her dad, restaurateur Clinton Pugh, who owns Kazbar and Café Coco in Oxford.

Last year she captioned a picture with her dad on Instagram: "The best elderflower pressé in town!

"Meet Mr. Pugh.. the man of Dawson Street. We all grew up in Cafe Coco and Kazbar, so it’s always so sentimental and a total treat to come back and be home again.

"Head over to the Sunny Side of Oxford and go get yourself a table full of tapas and mojitos, I nominated myself (haha) to try a few last night and this morning and was so nice to be back in my old stomping ground."

Mr Pugh's Spanish beach-inspired bar Café Tarifa, described as a “hidden oasis on Cowley Road” reopened in January.

Another actress reportedly in contention for the Madonna role is Ozark's Julia Garner currently starring in Inventing Anna on Netflix.

Both women bear a similarity to a young Madonna and Ms Garner also has vocal talents.

Madonna has also revealed she is in talks with Kanye West’s new girlfriend Julia Fox about her forthcoming film.

And in the running for the role is Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes Leon, according the The Mirror.

The singer began writing the film with Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning writer of Juno and Jennifer’s Body.

The current, final script is reportedly being written with Erin Wilson, who co-wrote The Girl on the Train.

A source told The Mirror that the movie will open in the 70s, when Madonna was struggling to get her career of the ground.

“It’s going to be a powerful and true depiction of Madonna’s life – think Bohemian Rhapsody, not Mamma Mia!” they said.

2021 was another big year for Ms Pugh with the world premiere of Marvel superhero film Black Widow in which she starred with Scarlett Johansson, playing a highly trained operative and assassin.

In September, the trailer was released for psychological thriller Don’t You Worry Darling which will star Ms Pugh and pop star Harry Styles.

The premise of the film is: "An unhappy housewife in the 1950s discovers a disturbing truth, while her loving husband hides a dark secret."

The film is set to be released in September 2022.
