Madonna has received a backlash over an Instagram post paying tribute to those affected by the Manchester terror attack.

A total of 22 people lost their lives and a further 59 people were injured after the incident at Manchester Arena during Ariana Grande's concert on Monday night (May 21).

On Tuesday, Madonna shared a snap with herself and Ariana alongside the caption: "Thank goodness my friend is OK.

"Let's all pray for the innocent victims who are not OK. For their families and for Manchester."

Her post attracted criticism for prioritising Ariana over the victims, with one person labelling the message "narcissistic" – although there were also plenty of people who defended her.

"Choose your words wisely," said one angry person. "Who the f**k cares about [Ariana]? What about the ones that lost their lives and their mourning families?"

Another said: "Being thankful that Ariana is OK, should have come at the end of the post.

"It should have been respect for the dead children that should be foremost in people's minds."

And a third person argued: "This post was so damn unnecessary! Think more before you post this kind of shit. Over-the-top narcassistic."

One Madonna fan coming to the singer's defence wrote: "I don't see the problem with the words.

"She is just expressing her happiness that her friend is safe and then has urged people to pray for the victims. It's encouraging unity, so I don't think her words are narcissistic."

"Madonna did nothing wrong," said another person. "She was just glad that one of her friends is safe."

Madonna wasn't the only person who drew ire on social media. Kim Kardashian West also paid tribute to the victims in the Manchester attack, but was accused of making it about herself.

Kim deleted that tweet, but kept up her other posts – in which she said she was "praying for everyone in Manchester".

An emergency number has been set up for those who are concerned about loved ones or anyone who may have been in the area – 0800 096 0095.
