As we've seen with the recent Storm Bert, winter is well and truly here.

Temperatures have plummeted across Lancashire, as well as heavy rain and strong winds to be expected on most days now. There's definitely a chill in the air - but it doesn't mean we have to be confined to our four walls.

Even though the sun may not be shining as strongly anymore, it's still good to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. A walk on a crisp winter's day is good for your mental and physical health and is even an excuse to escape the busy nature of everyday life.

Whilst we're certainly spoilt for walking options in Lancashire, sometimes it's nice to travel further afield and see what else there is to see. Greater Manchester has some fantastic canalside walks, which are truly spectacular during the winter months, the Manchester Evening News reports.

From Marple Locks to the Bridgewater canal, there's no shortage of waterside walks, but for a rural escape head to Diggle in Oldham. You can follow the Huddersfield Narrow Canal north from Uppermill to Diggle.

This is a beautiful stretch of canal crossed by pretty bridges and it has incredible views of Saddleworth Moor and is especially picturesque when there's been heavy frost or a recent snowfall.

Round off a chilly walk with a stop off in Diggle for a warming drink or a bite to eat. You can grab brunch at Diggle Lock, or a sweet treat at Grandpa Greene’s (although maybe it’s too cold for ice cream right now).
