Mahershala Ali lands huge role in animated Spider-Man
Filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller may have just left the Star Wars universe, but their Marvel movie is looking more intriguing than ever.
The writing and producing duo have landed Academy Award-winning Moonlight actor Mahershala Ali for a key voice role in their untitled animated Spider-Man movie.
Lord and Miller will bring the Miles Morales incarnation of the web-slinger to the big screen for the very first time in a story taking place in a Marvel Universe where original Spidey Peter Parker has fallen.
The demise of his hero inspires Miles Morales to don the mask of the spider, but the young vigilante finds himself pulled between both his father and uncle in the process.
According to Tracking Board, Vice Principals and Atlanta star Brian Tyree Henry has been hired as Miles's principled detective father Jefferson Davis whereas Mahershala Ali will play the hero's uncle Aaron Davis.
Although Aaron has a close bond with his nephew, he's hiding a double life as a cat burglar under the notorious alias Prowler.
Ali has previous experience in the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe, having played the New York crime boss Cottonmouth in Netflix's Luke Cage series.
Prowler will be one of two villains in the animated Spider-Man film. Liev Schreiber also recently landed a mysterious role as one of Miles' foes.
Voicing Miles in the Marvel animated project will be Shameik Moore, who has starred in Netflix's The Get Down as well as the indie comedy Dope.
The untitled animated Spider-Man film swings into cinemas on December 14, 2018 in US and UK cinemas.
