Mahershala Ali has weighed in on the controversy around last night's (February 26) Oscars, where La La Land was initially awarded Best Picture instead of actual winner Moonlight.

Ali, who won Best Supporting Actor for his role as drug dealer and father figure Juan in Moonlight, said it was difficult to accept the Best Picture accolade by taking it away from "extraordinary people" who worked on La La Land.

He said in a Twitter statement: "La La Land has done so well and resonated with so many people, especially in this time when people need a sense of buoyancy in their life and need some hope and light.

"So that film has really impacted people, sort of in a very different way than Moonlight. When their name was read, I wasn't surprised. I was really happy for them. It's a group of some extraordinary people in front of the camera and behind the camera."

The House of Cards favourite went on to explain that when it became clear something wasn't right, things got very awkward.

"When I did see security and people coming out on stage and their moment was being disrupted in some way, I got really worried," he continued.

"I didn't want to go up there and take away anything from somebody, you know? And that's very hard to feel joy in a moment like that."

Despite the win not going quite to plan, the actor has had a pretty good week, as along with his Oscar, he became a dad for the first time.

His wife Amatus Sami-Karim gave birth to their daughter, who they named Bari Najma.

So congratulations are definitely in order!
