Investigations and repairs are underway after a burst water main started ‘breaking up’ Tarmac in the middle of a main Isle of Wight road this afternoon (Monday, May 27).

It is understood that a burst main has occurred on Newport Road (A3056) between Honnor & Jeffrey Garden Centre and Sandown Airport, near Lake.

A witness said the Tarmac is ‘breaking up in the middle of the road’ and water pouring out, with residents in Lake reporting no or low water pressure.

Southern Water was alerted to the incident shortly after 12.30pm.

On the utility company’s website, an update on the incident reads: “We are aware of a burst in PO36 9QA.

“Our team is on the way to investigate and make the necessary repairs. Sometimes repairs take longer than we’d like, as we need to complete numerous checks and tests.”

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and we thank you for your patience.

The County Press has reached out to Southern Water for further comment.

UPDATE: Newport Road has been closed.
