A major road was partially closed this evening after a multi-vehicle crash.

The crash happened just outside the Pyramids Shopping Centre at the junction of Salisbury Street and Borough Road in Birkenhead, just before 5.30pm. It prompted a large response from the emergency services, with police, fire crews and paramedics all in attendance.

Police closed off the eastbound carriageway of Borough Road from Whetston Lane to Chester Street and cordoned off the scene of the accident directly outside the shopping centre, which closed its doors as usual just after the crash happened. Buses using the route were diverted.

When the ECHO arrived at the scene at around 7pm, a badly damaged people carrier and a van were still in the road. A woman was reportedly taken to hospital for assessment, but we do not know the nature or extent of her injuries.

Neighbours were upset by what they saw. One woman told the ECHO: "It was dreadful. I heard a massive crash and thought it was a lorry. I came outside and saw this awful scene. I’m really worried about the people involved."

One of the women on a nearby street reportedly ran over to help the woman who was injured in the crash by putting her in the recovery position before the ambulance arrived. Her neighbour said she was a hero, adding: "she just sprinted over and helped, didn't even think about it."

People in the area said they had seen a number of crashes before on that stretch of road. One man said: "It’s a bad road there. I’ve seen a few bad crashes over the years."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services are in Birkenhead following a serious RTC today, Tuesday 9 July. At around 5.25pm, we were called to Salisbury Street to reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles. One woman has been taken to hospital for assessment.

"A road closure is in place at Charing Cross and on Borough Road heading towards the tunnel. We would ask people to avoid the area while we deal with the incident. Thank you for your patience."
