Major Woking road closure explained after Storm Bert rips through town

A busy Woking route was forced to shut as a result of Storm Bert at the weekend. Strong winds ripped through the town and led to the A320 Victoria Way shutting. The road, near Victoria Square development, shut on Sunday, November 24 after movement of building cladding was noticed on the Green Car Park.

As a result, Surrey Police shut Victoria Way and hotel guests at the Hilton were moved to the other side of the building as a precaution. Woking Borough Council has denied that the building is dangerous, and stated no exterior panels were dislodged during the storm. The road reopened on Monday, November 25.

A Woking Borough Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the closure of Victoria Way adjacent to the Victoria Square development on Sunday, November 24. High speed winds caused by Storm Bert led to a small amount of visible movement to an exterior panel on level 7 of the Green Car Park. As a precaution, Surrey Police temporarily closed Victoria Way. We can confirm that Victoria Way has reopen.

“No exterior panels became loose or were dislodged during the storm and remained securely in place throughout the weekend’s storm. We would like to reassure residents that the building remains safe, however, Victoria Square Woking Ltd is working closely with its construction contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine, to ensure that best practice continues across the project.

“We understand a small number of hotel guests were moved to the other side of the building as a precaution. The hotel was not evacuated. We would like to thank Surrey Police and Surrey Fire and Rescue who attended the scene and would like to apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.”

In 2022, public areas in Woking town centre shut twice as a result of cladding falling from buildings. A panel fell from Albion House and also from the Hilton Hotel, part of the Victoria Place works, causing Victoria Way to shut for months.
