Majorca announces new 'limit' on UK tourists which is 'disproportionate and absurd'
Majorca has implemented its toughest measures yet by issuing a guided tours restriction limiting the amount of people to 20. Guided tours can currently have up to 70 people, although typically there are around 50, it has been reported.
UK tourists heading to the European Union holiday hotspot have been warned over the new limit. The Aviba association of agencies this week says that a guided tours' restriction in the ordinance is "disproportionate and absurd".
The president, Pedro Fiol, is warning that this "will stop us taking tourists to the city". "At an operational level it would be unviable and very expensive," he warned, backing travel agencies and tour operators flying to the Balearics.

A limit of twenty would make the tours more expensive and the cost would be passed on to the tourists, the Majorca Daily Bulletin, an island newspaper and news website, has reported this week ahead of the winter rush.
Mr Fiol doesn't believe that businesses in the city will be impressed by the limit, as a consequence will be that visitors have less spending money. "We currently have problems in being able to offer the excursions because we do not have enough guides. We therefore can't understand why they (the town all) are now going to demand that we double the number," he said.
Fiol points out there hasn't been any recruitment of new guides for 16 years, although the Council of Mallorca says that there will be in 2025. Responding to the new limit, a local fumed: "Who even cares if this type of thing is closed down completely. Tourists are more likely to spend money on their own than being led in a group of 50 like cattle. This type of tour is for fat moronic people."
A second typed: "Very good move. Groups of 50 people are totally ridiculous in our narrow and busy streets, they totally obstruct vehicles and other pedestrians when they drift slowly through the narrow streets with microphones in their ear making them utterly oblivious to what is going on around them. Even a maximum of 20 seems too much! To make a meaningful impact they also need to limit the total number of such tour groups making tours each day. An unlimited number of groups of 20 tourists will create many issues in the most touristed areas."
