Majorca 'out of control' and there is 'no solution in sight' for UK tourists

There is panic in Majorca as a taxi situation became "out of control", according to cab bosses. Biel Moragues, president of one of Mallorca's taxi driver associations, warned public transport and taxis cannot cope in high season on the European Union holiday hotspot.

"There cannot be more private cars. The solution is not more Uber or more taxis as we will just have more traffic jams," he said. Slamming Othman Ktiri, the CEO of OK Mobility, he went on: "That guy says that, if necessary, he'll bring all the hire cars needed.

"Yes, another way of increasing the traffic jams that tourists and residents suffer." He said: "Public transport cannot meet the demand we have, just as the road network, water consumption and housing cannot. In the end, everything is out of control. We lack taxi and bus drivers.

"We are faced with a serious problem with the model. There are so many components that are failing." He said: "For instance, we get calls from tourists on C. Joan Alcover. There are no hotels there. We taxi drivers know full well about these lets in Palma.

"And with this tourism model we cannot regulate traffic." Responding to his warning, a Brit said: "And meanwhile at least two (probably many more) unnecessary hotels are being built in Palma." A second said: "Taxi drivers should inform Consell of these illegal room rents. But no. Might me less clients if these are closed."

"Yet the airport continues to expand, I wonder what they know?" another asked. "Big sign post in this piece to illegal lets being in C. Joan Alcover, Palma. Do the Council inspectors read MDB, I wonder?" another said in response to the warning.

And another sniped to the Majorca Daily Bulletin news website last week: "Self-interest trumps civic responsibility every time."
