It seems Pennywise the Clown is as good at luring people into the cinema as he is at luring kids into gutters.

So much so that, in addition to breaking box office records in its opening weekend, Variety is reporting that IT is now the highest grossing horror movie in the United States' cinematic history.

The publication states that the Stephen King adaptation has grossed $236.3 million in the States (a number that will have grown since writing), which puts it above the previous crown-holder The Exorcist.

The '70s classic has reportedly grossed $232.9 million in America from its original theatrical run and multiple re-releases, including director's cuts, but that number has not been adjusted for inflation.

Internationally, The Exorcist is still beating IT in terms of worldwide box office gross, currently standing at $441.3 million in the global box office versus IT's $404.3 million.

Will Pennywise take the crown on the global market too? At this rate, we'd make a guess at saying it's very likely.

Speaking of director's cuts, IT is going to be getting an extended version when it releases on home media, with 15 minutes of new footage.

Hopefully we'll get even more Easter eggs like these ones, or maybe we'll even get to see the alternate ending too, which features a different version of the Losers' Club battle with Pennywise the Dancing Clown, according to actor Jaeden Lieberher.

IT is now in cinemas in the UK and US. Pre-order the DVD or Blu-ray here.
