Mall in Sydney Suburb Evacuated After Heavy Rain Causes Ceiling Collapse

A shopping mall in Sydney’s western suburbs was evacuated on Thursday, October 14, after parts of the roof collapsed under a deluge of heavy rain and hail.

Video captured by Aubrey Poole inside the Westfield mall in Mount Druitt shows rainwater pouring through parts of the ceiling where panels had fallen.

About 40 minutes before Poole posted the footage, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology had warned of a “very dangerous” storm with the possibility of tornadoes moving southeast over Mount Druitt toward Fairfield.

Fire and Rescue NSW said crews had responded and were trying to “assess the damage and stabilize the roof.” Credit: Aubrey Poole via Storyful
