A 37-YEAR-old man tragically died after falling off a wall on New Year’s Day, an inquest heard.

Shaun Christopher Wood, of Grasmere Avenue, Orford, had been out celebrating on December 31 before the horrific incident.

An inquest into his death at Warrington Coroner’s Court on Wednesday heard how he and a friend were walking near Thelwall Parish Hall after midnight on January 1.

It was pitch black and Mr Wood, who was a chef, attempted to climb a wall, but he fell onto his head and became unconscious.

He was taken to Warrington Hospital with a ‘serious head injury and fractures’ and was placed into a coma in order to try to reduce the swelling on his brain.

But it sadly didn’t work and Mr Wood was pronounced dead on January 7, the court heard.

Jacqueline Devonish, senior coroner for Cheshire, ruled Mr Wood’s death as accidental but said the medical cause was ‘hypoxic brain injury due to traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage’.

“All that remains is for me to extend my condolences to Mr Wood’s family,” Ms Devonish said.
