A man has been arrested after officers were called to reports of a burglary in Gateshead.

Police officers descended on Lambton Avenue in Whickham at around 1.10pm on Wednesday. Officers received reports a man had allegedly forced entry to an address and may have been in possession of a bladed article.

A man - aged 56 - has been arrested and remains in police custody. Northumbria Police said nobody was injured and there is no wider risk to the public.

A force spokesperson said: “At 1.10pm today (Thursday) we received a report of a burglary ongoing at an address on Lambton Avenue in Whickham.

“It was reported that a man had forced entry to an address and may have been in possession of a bladed article.

“Officers were immediately deployed to the scene and a 56-year-old man was arrested a short time later. He remains in police custody at this time.

“Nobody was injured. Officers believe all parties involved to be known to each other and there is no wider risk to the public.”
