SINGAPORE — A 60-year-old man on Tuesday (31 August) pleaded guilty at the High Court to two charges of sexually assaulting two underaged grand-nieces and one count of molest involving one of the victims.

A government psychiatrist found that the culprit suffers from pedophilic disorder – he was previously jailed for raping his underaged stepdaughter – and that the prognosis for his condition improving is "guarded".

He will be sentenced at a later date.

About the case

In 2013, the man was released from prison for the rape offence. He moved in with his older sister, her husband, the two victims and their mother. The man would sleep in the living room.

On one night in 2016, the man sexually assaulted the older victim, who was between 11 and 12 years old, while she slept. When the victim woke up and asked him what he was doing, he said he was trying to prevent her from falling off the bed.

The next year, the man sexually abused the younger victim, who was between 9 and 10 years old. He asked her to sit on his lap while she played games on her mobile phone and then slipped his hand into her pants.

When she jumped off his lap, he told her not to tell anyone about the incident. The younger victim ran into her room and closed the door.

The man abused the younger victim again a few days later.

The offences came to light about two years later when the younger victim ran away from home. When police officers found her, she told them that she did not want to continue staying with the culprit and revealed that he had abused her.

The man was arrested the same day.

For each of his two sexual assault by penetration charges, the man can be jailed for up to 20 years. For aggravated molest, he can be jailed for up to five years and also fined.

He cannot be caned as he is above 50.
