Man armed with hammer charges at police in dramatic mass street brawl

A man armed with a hammer charged officers in a dramatic street fight in Devon yesterday (Saturday, July 6). Police were called to reports of a street fight involving roughly ten people in Torquay Town Centre.

As officers arrived at the scene, the found a number of people screaming and shouting in the street and a male in possession of a hammer. The armed man then ran towards officers.

Officers were able to force the man to drop the hammer before he was able to injure anyone. The man was arrested at the scene being in possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

During the incident, the man made attempts to escape police custody, but he was unsuccessful. Local CCTV operators guiding additional police units to the scene to assist.

The man initially gave the police false information, but it he was soon identified. The man is currently wanted for other offences outside of the Devon and Cornwall area.

A statement from the force said: "Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or damage, thanks to speedy reporting and brave officers this incident quickly came to a safe ending with one in custody."
