A man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to kill a murder suspect after a woman was stabbed to death in the street, according to police.

Northamptonshire Police said a woman died after being knifed in Rushden on Saturday night.

Three arrests have been made following the fatal attack, including a 27-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy – who has now been released – over the woman’s death.

The other person, also aged 27, has been detained for attempted murder of the adult arrested on suspicion of killing the woman, who died at the scene.

A force spokesperson said they are all believed to have known each other and police are keeping an "open mind" with regards to motive.

Both detained men are in custody and the murder suspect is in hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Detective Inspector Pete Long said: “This was an extremely tragic incident in which a young woman has lost her life and I want to reassure people that we are doing all we can to bring those responsible to justice.

“A large team of detectives have been working on this case around the clock and a number of lines of inquiry are being pursued as part of this fast-paced investigation.”

The stabbing took place in Wellingborough Road in the Nottinghamshire town of Rushden at 8.30pm on 7 December.

Mr Long said: “This incident has really shocked the Rushden community, many of whom were on the scene last night, and I would ask anyone who was there and saw what happened to please come forward with your information.”

He appealed for anyone with dashcam footage which may have captured the incident to come forward.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Northamptonshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
