Man arrested after armed police respond to claims of bomb outside train station

A man has been arrested after claiming to have an explosive device outside a train station, prompting police and armed officers to descend on the scene.

Sussex Police were called to reports of a man making threats outside Brighton Railway Station at 3.49 on Sunday morning.

The station was closed to the public and a cordon was set up as officers carried out an extensive search of the area.

Armed police also attended to make an additional sweep of the scene.

A 27-year-old was arrested and has been taken into custody for questioning.

Police found he was not in possession of an explosive device.

Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw said: "This is being treated as an isolated incident and there is not thought to be any threat to public at this time.

"The cordon has now been lifted and train services have resumed from Brighton Railway Station.

"Officers remain at the scene working with British Transport Police to carry out further enquiries.

"We are thankful to the public for their patience and understanding while we carried out our work.”
