Attempted murder charge after woman, 71, stabbed and sexually assaulted in Worcester

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a 71-year-old woman was stabbed and sexually assaulted in Worcester.

The attack happened around 2am on Sunday in Kleve Walk - alongside the River Severn - according to West Mercia Police.

Detectives say the woman suffered multiple stab wounds. She remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Anthony Roberts, 56, from Worcester, has been charged with attempted murder.

He has also been charged with sexual assault and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Roberts is due to appear at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Superintendent Rebecca Love said police were treating the attack as "an isolated incident".
