A man has been arrested after he took off from officers on an illegal e-bike. Police seized two illegal e-bikes and arrested a 20-year-old man, from Huyton, following separate incidents in Huyton and Bootle on Monday, September 2.

Merseyside Police were on patrol on Longview Drive, in Huyton, when they saw a man driving an illegally adapted e-bike in an anti-social manner. He failed to stop despite being asked to by officers. They followed him onto a nearby street and arrested him on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle without a licence, drug driving, failing to stop, possessing a controlled Class B drug (cannabis) and using a motor vehicle without insurance. He has been released under investigation.

In a separate incident on the same day, a driver of an e-bike was stopped on Merton Road, in Bootle, and the vehicle was seized after officers suspected it had been illegally adapted.

Inspector Brian Loughran said: “Thanks to the quick-thinking actions of officers who were on patrol, they have been able to seize two suspected illegal e-bikes in separate incidents and also make an arrest.

“We know how frustrating the anti-social use of electric bikes and mopeds can be for our communities. The offenders who ride them anti-socially not only pose a threat to other road users and pedestrians, they risk their own safety by riding too fast, through red lights and often without a helmet. We regularly attend reports of incidents to attempt to prevent those on the bikes from posing any further risk to our communities.
