Man assaulted in West Belfast after being spoken to by police about 'remarks to teenage girl'

A man was assaulted by a "number of men" after he was spoken to police earlier about "remarks to a teenage girl that made her uncomfortable", the PSNI has said.

The man was taken to hospital by police officers following the alleged assault on the Suffolk Road in west Belfast, shortly after 8pm on Sunday (September 29).

A spokesperson for the PSNI said police are "aware" of speculation linking the incident to "recent reported approaches to women and attempted sexual assaults in the area" but insisted there is "no evidence linking this occurrence to previous reports at present".

Video circulating on social media on Sunday night appeared to show an injured man lying flat on his back as cars passed by.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: "A man was taken to hospital by police after he was assaulted by a number of men on Suffolk Road in west Belfast shortly after 8pm on Sunday evening, 29 September.

"The male had earlier been spoken to by police after a separate report that he had made remarks to a teenage girl that made her uncomfortable."

The statement added: "We are aware of speculation connecting this incident to recent reported approaches to women and attempted sexual assaults in the area however there is no evidence linking this occurrence to previous reports at present, and no arrests have been made.
