Man attempts to drive car at high speed into a crowd in Antwerp

A man has been arrested after trying to drive a car ‘at high speed’ onto a pedestrianised shopping street in Antwerp, police have said.

No injuries have been reported.

‘At about 11 am this morning a vehicle entered De Meir at high speed due to which pedestrians had to jump away,’ a Belgian police spokesman told a news conference.

‘A man in camouflage was taken away.’

He said that the driver, whose car had French number plates, had been arrested, and that additional security would be deployed in the city.

The attack comes just a day after a terrorist mowed down pedestrians on London’s Westminster Bridge, killing two people and injuring dozens more, before driving to parliament and fatally stabbing a policeman.
