Man buys huge RAF Scampton sign - which turns out to be bigger than his house
A man got more than he bargained for when he bought an RAF sign on Facebook Marketplace – which turned out to be bigger than his house. Steve Jollands, 55, spotted an old RAF Scampton road sign for sale and thought it would look good mounted on his wall at home.
He forked out less than £100 for the red and white arrowed sign and drove to a woman’s house to pick it up. But the former RAF electrician was stunned when he discovered the sign was 9ft (2.7m) long.
He had to fold all the seats down in his Range Rover and strap the sign down but it still stuck out the back of his boot when he drove it home. Steve, from Lincoln, said: "Stupidly, I didn't ask for the dimensions and I have bought a sign that is far too large for my house.

"I thought it would be three-to-four foot long and would fit nicely in my office at home. My mates think it’s hilarious and my partner Sarah isn’t too happy either.
"I’d still like to mount it somewhere at home but it won’t fit inside any of the rooms. It's higher than my bungalow. I live opposite the International Bomber Command Centre on Canwick Hill.
"If I put it up anywhere there people would probably be able to see it from space."
The sign had been used as a turn-off on the A46 Lincoln bypass but was sold off when the site was closed in 2022. Steve worked at RAF Scampton between 1994 and 1995 in the hangars which famously housed The Dambuster Squadron in World War Two.
Steve, who is a general manager at Harley-Davidson, added: "It's certainly a memento of my time at RAF Scampton, but what I'm going to do with it now I don't know."
