Man charged with multiple offences as part of probe into attack on Tiernan Rooney days before his death

A 31-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences, including attempted grievous bodily harm, as part of the investigation into the attack on Tiernan Rooney days before he passed away.

Tiernan Rooney was stabbed numerous times in the head outside his home on Conway Place in West Belfast on Sunday, December 29, with the 28-year-old passing away a few days later at his home.

Police have said that following a post-mortem examination his death is not being linked to the stabbing attack on him.

Police arrested a 31-year-old man has part of their investigation into the attack on Mr Rooney, who has now been charged with attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence and theft. He was due to appear at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, January 29.

A 35-year-old man has also been arrested as part of the investigation into the assault and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "A 31 year old man has been charged with attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence and theft.

"He is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court today, Wednesday 29th January. As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

"The charges are in relation to a report of the assault of a man, aged in his 20s, at Conway Place, west Belfast on Sunday 29th December 2024.

"A 35 year old man, arrested last week as part of the investigation into this assault, was released on police bail pending further enquiries."
