A 54-year-old man has pleaded guilty to daubing racist graffiti on the door of a father and son’s home in Salford.

Vaughan Dowd, 54, of Irlam Square, Salford, pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court after being arrested and charged with criminal damage and racially aggravated criminal damage, earlier in the day.

It followed an incident which made headlines as much for the response of the police as well as the incident itself.

Jackson Yamba reported the ‘abhorrent’ crime to the GMP after the words ‘NO BLACKS’, visible in dripped white paint, were painted on his family door.

When Mr Yamba said he was told there were not enough staff when he contacted GMP on February 8, Mr Hopkins replied: ‘That is frankly just not good enough.

He said it took a week for the police to respond.

Mr Yamba posted the image on Twitter and said: ‘How do I assure my traumatised 10 year old that he is safe in his home?’

After taking to social media, chief constable Ian Hopkins said he had only just become aware of the ‘appalling crime’ and apologised for the lack of response.

‘There may have been other issues at the time, but we should have followed up quickly. It’s an appalling crime you and your family have suffered.’

After taking to Twitter, Mr Yamba and his son received many messages of support.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the pair replace their door, and exceeded its £1,000 target in less than six hours.

And they were invited to be special guests at a local rugby match and meet the Salford Red Devils.

On Thursday, Mr Yamba took to Twitter again to say thank you for the support following the arrest.

Just a quick update. The suspect has been arrested this morning by Greater Manchester Police,’ he wrote.

‘My son I are very grateful for your ongoing support, kind messages and solidarity displayed across Salford, the Country and all over the world.’
