Man City 4-1 Club Brugge LIVE! Jesus goal - Champions League result, match stream and latest updates today

Manchester City vs Club Brugge - LIVE!

Man City are back in Champions League action this evening and looking to put a difficult week behind them as they target a third win in four group games.

City’s long Carabao Cup reign was brought to an end by West Ham last week as Pep Guardiola’s side were knocked out of the competition for the first time in five years.

They then followed that penalty shootout loss up with a more alarming 2-0 Premier League defeat at home to Crystal Palace.

City face PSG in matchday five, so know the importance of victory tonight if they are to avoid a potentially hairy end to the group stage and three points would see them well on their way to the last-16 as they continue in their quest to go one better than last year’s final defeat to Chelsea.

FT: Man City 4-1 Club Brugge

21:51 , Matt Verri

There’s not time to kick-off again.

City run out comfortable winners in the end, despite some stumbling moments in the first-half.

Foden, Mahrez, Sterling and Jesus on the scoresheet as Guardiola’s side march on.

One point ahead of PSG now... Group A could be decided next time out when the Parisians travel to Manchester.

GOAL! Man City 4-1 Club Brugge| Gabriel Jesus 90+2’

21:49 , Matt Verri

And City just about find time to score another!

It’s a lovely finish from Jesus, curled into the far corner as the ball fell to him into the box.

21:46 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Vanaken has a chance to halve the deficit, but Stones comes flying across to block the shot.

Battling performance from Brugge. They’ve looked dangerous when they’ve attacked... they just haven’t done it very often.

21:44 , Matt Verri

87 mins: It should really be four!

Jesus’ turn to miss a chance now. De Bruyne’s pass is deflected but it plays the Brazilian in, and he tries to slide it under the onrushing Mignolet.

The Belgian once again does well though to keep it out.

21:42 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Palmer looks to match Sterling’s impact off the bench. He drives into the box and looks to set up the standard City goal of a tap-in from three yards.

Brugge are expecting it though, and clear it away.

Zinchenko slides Palmer in and he has an effort himself, but it’s a strong hand from Mignolet.

21:36 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Brugge now make some changes themselves. They gave City a bit of a scare, but it looks like their race is run.

Gundogan is played in by Sterling, he tries to play it across goal, and it’s very close to being yet another tap in goal.

Walker off for Zinchenko, Foden off for Palmer.

21:32 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Bernardo Silva off, Kevin De Bruyne on.

The good news just keeps on coming for Brugge.

GOAL! Man City 3-1 Club Brugge| Raheem Sterling 71'

21:30 , Matt Verri

Sterling gets his reward, and it’s his second goal of the season.

They keep Brugge penned in, it’s crossed into the box, and Sterling is on hand to tap home from a matter of yards.

Three goals, and that’s surely the three points secured.

21:29 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Brugge mount their first attack in a while, and it finishes with Vanaken stretching and sending his volley straight into Stones.

City back on the attack, and Sterling is keen to make an immediate impact. His pressing is brilliant, he lays it off to Silva who very nearly finds Jesus in the middle.

But they don’t have to wait long...

21:25 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Guardiola turns to his bench for the first time tonight.

Grealish and Mahrez off, Jesus and Sterling on. It’s a tough life being the City boss.

21:21 , Matt Verri

65 mins: He’s starting to run the show now, is Silva. He breaks away again, sits Mechele down with a lovely feint, but the ball just runs away from him before he can shoot.

Guardiola’s side fully in control of this one again.

21:20 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Silva floats a ball into the box which doesn’t trouble the defence, but it drops to Gundogan.

The City captain fires an effort at goal, but it’s always rising and Mignolet can watch it sail over the bar.

21:16 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Vormer with a strong challenge on Laporte, which is given as a foul.

Cancelo doesn’t like it and lets Vormer know, but it’s all something out of nothing.

GOAL! Man City 2-1 Club Brugge| Riyad Mahrez 54'

21:12 , Matt Verri

That’s what Brugge get for attacking!

City go straight up the other end and take the lead. Cancelo cuts inside onto his right foot, sends a ball into the box and Mahrez heads home.

It’s dreadful defending from the hosts... the Algerian was completely unmarked.

21:11 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Silva jinks past Sobol on the right wing, keeps driving into the box but the ball just runs out of play as he tries to cut it back.

Brugge then produce their first attack of the half. Mata chips a ball over the top, Ketelaere with a lovely touch to bring it down but his effort is wide.

21:08 , Matt Verri

51 mins: It’s been a good start to the second-half from City. Cancelo lets fly from just outside the box, and the smallest of deflections just takes it past the far post.

The hosts keep the pressure on after the corner is cleared - nine yellow shirts plus Mignolet in the box.

Cancelo floats a ball in, but Stones’ header is easily saved by Mignolet.

21:04 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Mahrez’s attempt really well saved.

Grealish committed the defenders and somehow found a gap to poke a ball through to the Algerian.

He went for power with his right foot, but Mignolet came charging out to smother the effort.

Second-half underway

21:02 , Matt Verri

City get the second-half started.

They’ll be hoping for a 45 minutes more like the start of the first-half.

21:01 , Matt Verri

Brugge first back out for the second-half. City players follow, a few of them deep in conversation with each other.

De Bruyne, Sterling, and Jesus among the options off the bench. Not exactly time to panic.

As it stands in Group A

20:54 , Matt Verri

RB Leipzig took the lead early on against PSG, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in front at half-time thanks to two goals from Gini Wijnaldum.

That leaves City currently three points behind the French side... and only two ahead of Brugge.

Leipzig are on course for their fourth straight defeat.

20:50 , Matt Verri

Guardiola will not be impressed with how that half turned out.

His side failed to react to being pegged back, but he’ll be confident they can regain their mojo in the second-half.

HALF-TIME: Man City 1-1 Club Brugge

20:47 , Matt Verri

The Brugge fans are bringing out the ‘Olé’ chants as their side pass the ball around. A loose touch swiftly stops that though, as the Brugge defence panic and smash the ball away.

That’s half-time. For 15 minutes it looked like City would run away with it, but a freak own goal got Brugge back in it and since then they’ve held their own.

20:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Silva tries to slide in Grealish, but there’s just no space and the wall of yellow shirts converge on him.

Walker looks in a bit of pain, after awkwardly twisting his right ankle. Looks like he’ll carry on for now - only a couple of minutes until half-time.

20:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Cancelo beats Mata about three times, and tries his luck against Vormer but the midfielder is having none of it and wins the ball.

Ketelaere then spins away on the halfway line, but Rodri is there and sniffs out the danger.

20:39 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Brugge look particularly dangerous down the right-hand side, Mata getting forward well to take advantage of any space left by Cancelo.

Lang has also been impressive. Another attack builds down the right, but the offside flag puts a stop to that.

20:33 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Scotland’s Jack Hendry got his head on it, but not enough power to trouble Ederson.

Sobol now fires a low cross into the box, but it’s cleared away. Hendry back involved with a strong run towards the City box.

It breaks to Ketelaere and his shot is a good one, but Ederson once again up to the job.

20:31 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Half an hour gone.... 26% of possession for Brugge, two shots, but they find themselves level.

They have a free-kick now in a promising position on the right wing, and up come the centre-backs.

20:29 , Matt Verri

28 mins: The visitors definitely feeling a bit more adventurous now.

City won’t mind that though, will open up some space for them to attack. Stones still looks a bit shell-shocked after the ball cannoned off his face into his own net.

20:25 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Mata lays it off for Lang, who clips in a cross to the far post and Stones can only head it out for a corner.

Brugge growing in confidence after that shock equaliser. Ederson claims the corner though, and City are back off and running.

20:22 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Well that certainly burst into life all of a sudden.

It’s back to the early pattern of play now - City knocking it around, Brugge sitting in contently.

GOAL! Man City 1 -1 Club Brugge | John Stones (OG) | 17’

20:19 , Matt Verri

WHERE HAS THAT COME FROM?

Brugge are level almost immediately! Vanaken’s weak, looping effort is just about clawed away by Ederson.

It’s fired back across goal though, flicks off Silva, hits Stones, and rolls in for an own goal.

Somehow it’s level again!

GOAL! Man City 1 -0 Club Brugge | Phil Foden 15'

20:16 , Matt Verri

We can safely file that down under ‘been coming’ for City.

Cancelo very nearly opens the scoring a minute earlier but his curling effort hits the woodwork.

The full-back is involved again though, firing across the face of goal where Foden is waiting to tap home.

VAR check for offside... goal stands. City get the lead they deserve.

20:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Mignolet decides to make the most of his time on the ball and brings out the Cruyff turn as Foden comes charging in to close him down.

The former Liverpool man just about pulls it off with no damage done. Just about.

20:12 , Matt Verri

11 mins: A Brugge attack, and a Brugge corner. First sign of an attacking threat from the visitors.

The corner is flicked away to Sobol, who tries his luck from the edge of the box but it’s scuffed well wide.

20:10 , Matt Verri

9 mins: That comes to nothing, but it’s only a few seconds before City are back on the front foot.

Cancelo chips an inviting ball over the top, but Foden can only divert it over the bar on the stretch.

20:08 , Matt Verri

7 mins: To say Brugge are sitting back would be an understatement. It’s up to City to break down the wall of yellow.

Foden makes a nice run in behind, and wins a corner for his side.

20:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Gundogan and Silva try to combine, but it’s just overhit and runs out for a goal-kick.

That will be at least a few seconds of res.... never mind, Brugge decide to play out from the back and get caught.

Mahrez is nearly in, but he’s just crowded out as he goes to shoot.

20:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: City have Brugge penned in from the opening moments.

Grealish has already had a couple of bright moments, and the hosts are as patient as ever in possession.

Finally they get a shot away... it’s a powerful one from Bernardo Silva, but well blocked.

KICK-OFF: Man City 0-0 Club Brugge

20:00 , Matt Verri

Vanaken gets the match started.... we’re off!

19:58 , Matt Verri

Ilkay Gundogan captains City tonight, and he leads his side out onto the pitch.

Champions League anthem done. A few more handshakes and a coin toss to go, and then we’ll be ready to get underway.

Five minutes to go...

19:56 , Matt Verri

Nearly time for kick-off at the Etihad.

City will be looking for another comfortable win, ready to take advantage of any slip-up from PSG against RB Leipzig.

Tough week Pep?

19:48 , Matt Verri

After being knocked out of the Carabao Cup and then losing at home to Crystal Palace, Pep gets asked if he and his team have had a tough week.

“No,” is the reply.

He expands on that slightly: “No no.”

That’s that clarified then.

Here’s what happened in the reverse fixture in Belgium...

De Bruyne benched

19:10 , Malik Ouzia

So, Pep Guardiola has made three changes to his side tonight and perhaps the most eye-catching of them sees the out-of-form Kevin de Bruyne drop to the bench as Ilkay Gundogan comes into the side.

Elsewhere, there are rests for Gabriel Jesus and Ruben Dias, with John Stones and Riyad Mahrez the men to benefit.

Man City predicted XI: Ederson; Cancelo, Dias, Stones, Zinchenko; Rodri, De Bruyne, Gundogan; Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling.

Standard Sport prediction

18:24 , Malik Ouzia

City, the embodiment of consistency when at their best under Guardiola, may not be at their rampant best all the time these days but the gulf in quality between the two clubs in the first leg was painfully obvious.

It may be tighter and Brugge can certainly cause problems, but it’s hard to look past a City win.

Man City to win 2-0.

Club Brugge team news

18:12 , Malik Ouzia

Brugge, meanwhile, will be without Eder Balanta through Champions League suspension but Bas Dost scored twice during their weekend win over St. Truiden, potentially playing his way into contention.

Man City team news

18:01 , Malik Ouzia

Needing to win and keep Brugge off their tails in pursuit of PSG, Guardiola will surely opt to field a strong line-up even despite their recent commitments in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup and with a Manchester derby to come at the weekend.

Ferran Torres remains the only real injury concern, although Kevin De Bruyne’s recent form is somewhat of a worry. With that in mind, perhaps Cole Palmer - who impressed against West Ham - could come into the side to freshen things up.
