Man demanded woman's social media passwords and threatened to stab her dad

A man humiliated his victim by bombarding her with threatening messages and other distressing material.

Declan Goulbourne, 24, blitzed his victim with threats over three days, including an abusive text message in which he threatened to stab the victim's father. He also threatened to share compromising material with her mother and demanded she hand over the passwords to her private social media accounts.

Derek Jones, prosecuting, said Goulbourne, of Round Hey, Stockbridge Village, had demanded access to his victim's private accounts, and "he told her he would kill himself by throwing himself off a bridge he she wouldn't allow him to do that, and it would be her fault".

He said: "He later sent abusive messages to the victim, demanding she share all her passwords to all her social media accounts. He also threatened to smash her house up."

Mr Jones said this then moved on to threatening to share other material he uploaded to his own Instagram account, and the victim pleaded with him to delete it. He responded by being abusive and again making demands, at one point, pretending 17 people had already viewed the material."

Carmel Wilde, defending, said the offending had occurred over a short period of three days. She said: "He does have low mood, anxiety and difficulties. He has pleaded guilty. The offending was over a short period and he accepts that he must have caused extreme distress for the complainant."

Sentencing, Judge David Aubrey said: "There can be no doubt that during that three-day period you caused (the victim) distress and humiliation. To your credit, you have pleaded guilty to all these matters."

He sentenced Goulbourne to a total of nine months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
