Man dies after being hit by car on way to buy lottery ticket

A man who was hit by a car while on his way to buy a lottery ticket has died. Emergency services were called to the junction of Rathbone Road and Wellington Road in Wavertree on Friday, November 22, at around 7.15pm following reports a man had been hit by a Toyota Prius.

The 71-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries but his family has now confirmed to the ECHO he died around 1am today after being taken off a ventilator yesterday (Thursday, November 28). The driver of the Toyota stopped at the scene and a large cordon was put in place while enquiries were ongoing.

A member of the man's family described the death as "cruel" and explained how the family feel "robbed" after the fatal incident. Speaking to the ECHO previously, the family member said: "I want people to know he was just going to the shop to get a lottery ticket when it happened. He lives in the area, he was two minutes away from his house."

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy from the Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Our thoughts are with this man’s family at this sad time and they are being supported by a specially trained officer.

"An investigation into the circumstances of this collision are ongoing and I would appeal to anyone, who we haven’t already spoken to and who was in the area on the evening of Friday 22 November, who may have witnessed this collision or the moments leading up to the incident, to please get in touch. Getting answers for this man’s family is a priority and we value any help that can be provided”.
