Man dies after 'discharging firearm' in 'tragic' Stafford town centre incident

A man has died in a "tragic incident" after discharging a firearm in Stafford town centre. Emergency services were called to Espleys Yard at around 6.20pm on Friday (May 31) following a concern for welfare report.

Police say that a man in his 50s discharged a firearm, resulting in him being seriously injured. Despite the best efforts of medics at the scene, he sadly died a short time later.

Officers secured the scene and do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the public. They are not looking for anyone else as part of this investigation and the man’s next of kin have been informed.

Detective Inspector Louise Booker, who is investigating the incident, said: "Our thoughts are with the man’s family in what is a tragic incident. We remain in regular contact with them and will be providing specialist support."

There has been an increased police presence in the area following the incident to assist with the investigation and to provide reassurance to local residents. Police are not treating the death as suspicious but we continue to investigate the circumstances that led up to the incident.
