Man dies after falling on mountain in the Highlands

A 70-year-old man has died after falling on a mountain in the Highlands.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, was walking on An Teallach Sgurr Fiona near Dundonnell when he fell.

Emergency services were called out a 1.35pm on Sunday

His body was later found by a Coastguard search and rescue helicopter.

Police Scotland North Highland area commander Chief Inspector Jamie Wilson said: "Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends at this time.

“I would like to pass on my thanks to our colleagues at the Coastguard and also to the Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team who provided assistance.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course."

At least 10 people have died this year in the Scottish mountains, including brothers Neil and Alan Gibson who failed to return from a walk with their black Pointer dog, Archie, in Strathcarron in February

Stephen Mitchell also died in the Strathcarron area in February and Christopher Fryer fell on Sgurr Thuilm in Glenfinnan a few days later.

The body of Jim Stalker was located in Glen Spean in February while Polish climber Marcin Bialas fell through a snow cornice on Ben Nevis in January.

Three climbers, two Frenchmen and one Swiss man, also died in an avalanche on Ben Nevis in March.
