A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a “shocking” machete brawl in front of screaming residents of a Greenwich estate on Wednesday afternoon.

In a video, posted on social media, a topless man with a large sword appears to hold off three knife-wielding attackers as they clash about 4.30pm.

The group bang their weapons off lamp posts in an attempt to intimidate each other before landing slashing blows.

People living in the flats can be heard screaming for police and seen hurling items from their balcony in a desperate attempt to stop the clash.

A child’s voice can be heard shouting “what the hell is happening? Get off!” as the men continue to fight.

A witness, who didn’t want to be named said the fight was “traumatising for residents” as he watched police give the victim, a man in his 30s, CPR.

He said: “I could see a lot of people on the balconies watching, worst of all a lot of children. This sort of thing happening in broad daylight. It makes you question if cuts to policing continues, will these incidents be the norm or get worse?”

The victim was taken to hospital where police said he was “fighting for his life”.

There have been no arrests at this stage.

Detective Inspector Dave Ryan, said: “This was a shocking incident that occurred in broad daylight outside people’s homes. A man is now fighting for his life in hospital and we all need to work together to stop these acts of violence.”
