A man is fighting for his life after a chip pan exploded into a fireball at his London flat.

He was rushed to hospital and remains in critical condition after the horrific incident at a fourth floor apartment in Abbey Wood at 4.40am Saturday morning.

Two children and a woman who were inside the home reportedly managed to escape after the pan went up in flames.

The man, who has not been named, is believed to have poured cold water onto the pan in a bid to extinguish the blaze.

But it’s thought it actually caused it to explode and the flames spread.

The man suffered serious burns. He was taken to hospital, where he remains in critical condition, according to the Standard.

A shocking image released by the London Fire Brigade shows the devastation the blaze caused to the flat’s kitchen.

“If your pan catches fire the most dangerous thing you can do is put cold water on it, as we saw here, it’s likely to explode into a fireball,” said a London Fire Brigade spokesman.
