Man Flashes Passport At Passers By As Protection Against Post-Brexit Hate Crime
One man has taken to the streets with his passport held aloft as protection against the reported rise in racist crimes post Brexit.
Posting the video to Facebook, Nalin Dissanayake commented, “It’s that kind of world now.”
The video - part joke, part sadly serious - has been watched more than 635,000 times and shared by nearly 10,000 people.
With the title, “Have to take safety precautions when leaving the house now”, the video shows him walking down the street, passport held aloft.
He shows his British passport as he passes people in the street, the implication being that he is proving he is British and therefore shouldn’t be abused.
Figures suggest there has been a 57% rise in racist incidents being reported since last Thursday’s referendum.
“In the past few days we have seen despicable graffiti daubed on a Polish community centre, we’ve seen verbal abuse hurled against individuals because they are members of ethnic minorities,” Prime Minister David Cameron said.
“Let’s remember these people have come here and made a wonderful contribution to our country. We will not stand for hate crime or these kinds of attacks, they must be stamped out.”
