Man found dead after heavy police presence spotted on city centre street

A man has been found dead after a heavy police presence was spotted in the city.

Police cars and an ambulance were seen in Oriental Place in Brighton this afternoon at around 1.20pm with concerns for a man's welfare.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin have been informed.

A plumber, who was working inside a nearby flat, said: "All of a sudden I heard lots of sirens.

"It was really loud and went on for a good five minutes."

Another eyewitness claimed to see "undercover police officers" on the road.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to Oriental Place in Brighton at around 1.20pm this afternoon due to concerns for a man’s welfare.

"A man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened, but there is not believed to be any risk to the public."
