Man goes missing during group swim near Devon

Police have launched an investigation after a swimmer failed to return to shore while with friends on the North Cornwall coast. The emergency services, including HM Coastguard, rushed to Northcott Mouth in Bude following the incident on Tuesday, June 4.

Devon and Cornwall Police were alerted to a sighting of a person last seen in the water. According to a social media update from Bude Police, a group swam in the sea, but one man did not return to the beach. His family have been informed.

In their appeal for information, Bude Police urged the public to avoid speculating about the incident. The force said it is aware of social media comments circulating about the emergency response.

Bude Police released a statement saying: "We are aware of comments on social media about the emergency service presence in Bude since last night including coastguard and other services. We can confirm that emergency services were called during the evening of 4 June 2024 to the area of Northcott Mouth, Bude after receiving a report of a person last seen in the water.", reports Cornwall Live.

"A group of people were reported to have gone swimming and one man did not return to land. His family have been made aware."
