A man has been rushed to hospital after falling from a roof above Kilmarnock shops last night.

Emergency services launched a rooftop rescue of the 49-year-old man after the alarm was raised just after 9pm last night.

Specialist mercy crews were among those dispatched to the King Street shops for the painstaking mission.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue height vehicle complete with a hydraulic ladder eventually arrived at the car park - based between M&S and the former BHS building.

It was speculated that a person had crashed into shops below but it's understood this is not the case.

Fitted with a platform, the hydraulic ladder system carried a stretcher and vital medical personnel to the roof.

It's understood that the injured man was brought down on the platform in a stretcher before being loaded into an ambulance and conveyed to hospital.

We also understand the man sustained serious but non life-threatening injuries.

The emergency services were on the scene until well after midnight.

Around six police vehicles, three Scottish Ambulance Service motors - including two incident response units - and five fire engines, which also included a specialist team were all scrambled to the scene.

Mercy crews complete with helmets and what appeared to be climbing equipment were also spotted.

Rescue workers focused their efforts above the shops on King Street with the majority of attention being paid to roof space above the former Citizens Advice unit, TUI shop, Card Factory and the O2 store.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.15pm on Saturday, September 28, officers received a report of a man having been injured after falling from a roof on King Street, Kilmarnock.

“The 49-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment.

“Enquiries are ongoing."
