Man jailed for 'fuelling' violence at Bristol riot

A 57-year-old man has been jailed for his role in the far-right riot in Bristol last month. Bristol Crown Court heard how Wayne Murray, of Winterbourne, “was at the centre of the violent mob” and that his involvement “fuelled” the violence.

Murray shouted aggressively and gestured towards police officers during the disorder in the city centre on Saturday, August 3. He also launched objects at them as the shameful scenes unfolded.

The 57-year-old pleaded guilty to violent disorder earlier this month. He appeared at Bristol Crown Court earlier today (Tuesday, September 24) and was sentenced to 26 months in prison.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Herbert said: “Murray’s behaviour that day was completely shameful and he has now received a lengthy prison sentence as a result. Two-dozen people have now been sentenced for their involvement on that day and we continue to work to identify and arrest others involved.”

A total of 51 people have been arrested so far following the disorder, while 40 people have been charged. Murray is the 24th offender to be jailed.
