A 51-year-old man has been jailed for eight weeks after pleading guilty to harassment without violence.

Justin Paul Young, of Portreath, Cornwall, was sentenced on Tuesday.

The court heard that Young had harassed a female victim between June 28 and July 10 last year.

During this time, Young sent the victim multiple messages despite her telling him not to.

He also attended her address without her permission, took an item without her permission, and read her emails without her knowledge.

During Young's sentencing, the "horrible offence" was described as "so serious" because of the effect it had on the victim.

Young was sentenced to eight weeks in prison and was made the subject of a restraining order, which prevents him from contacting the victim either directly or indirectly or going to an address in Redruth.

The restraining order will last until April 17, 2025.

Young was also made to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £154 with the court noting that his guilty plea had been taken into account when imposing the sentence.

According to the Sentencing Council, harassment is "behaviour intended to cause a person alarm or distress. The behaviour must occur on more than one occasion but it does not have the be the same kind of behaviour on each occasion."

Young pleaded guilty to harassment without violence. Harassment that involves putting people in fear of violence is considered a much more serious offence that involves two or more harassment incidents that leave the victim fearing that violence will be used against them.
