A man who killed a woman he’d just met by strangling her during sex has been jailed for six years.

Mark Bruce, 32, had been on a night out in Aberdeen on 3 November last year when he started chatting to 20-year-old Chloe Miazek at a bus stop.

They headed to Bruce’s city centre flat where they went to bed at 3.30am.

During sex, Bruce fatally squeezed his hands around the supermarket worker’s neck.

Support worker Bruce, who had already pleaded guilty to culpable homicide, was jailed at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Judge Lord Kinclaven said there was a “significant sexual element” to the offence, adding that a prison term was his only sentencing option.

He said: “You have been convicted of culpable homicide. There is no other way to deal with you.” He also placed Bruce on the Sex Offenders’ Register.

Defence QC Brian McConnachie said Bruce took responsibility for his victim’s death, insisting he hadn’t meant to kill her. He added that Ms Miazek, who also worked as a waitress, hadn’t consented to being choked and that Bruce was remorseful.

Following the sentencing, Ms Miazek’s family said in a statement: “No matter the outcome today or what has been said in court, Chloe – our beautiful daughter – was a young girl in the prime of her life who did not deserve to die.

“She was thoughtful, caring and intelligent and was loved dearly by her entire family and many friends.

“Losing a child is every parent’s worst nightmare, but it’s a reality we now face. We will always remember Chloe for the loving girl she was and will forever try to keep that memory alive.”
