Man jailed after tricking woman into his home and raping her

A man has been jailed after tricking a woman into his home and raping her.

Abiodun Adeagbo, 33, had arranged to meet up with the victim in July 2015.

The victim, who knew him by the name Marvin, had travelled to London by coach to meet him at Victoria.

Adeagbo had told her they were going to go to the cinema.

However, when they met up he told her he’d forgotten his cinema card at home in Peckham and said they needed to go and pick it up.

When they got to his flat, he suggested they go into his bedroom to eat.

Adeagbo started to kiss her as soon as they were in the room.

He also moved her against the wall, touching her sexually and attempting to undo her trousers.

The victim, who was visibly distressed by the situation, tried to stop him but he continued.

He then raped the victim before getting up and leaving the room.

The victim came forward on 8 January 2016, giving a statement to police about what happened.

Adeagbo was identified from information provided to police by the victim.

He was arrested at his home address in Peckham on 24 January.

He denied the offence when he was interviewed by police before being bailed while an investigation was launched.

Police said they charged Adeagbo on 10 August 2019 after a complex investigation.

He pleaded not guilty at the beginning of his trial at Inner London Crown Court on 19 April 2021 but was later found guilty.

He was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday.

Detective Constable Benedict Harrington, of the South East Command Unit, said: “The sentencing today is the result of a complex and lengthy investigation spanning a number of years.

“I hope this shows that justice can be brought no matter the time that has passed and that victims should always feel able to speak up and come forward to us.

"I hope the verdict brings the victim some closure after what has been a deeply upsetting and traumatising experience.

“She has stayed strong and supported the investigation and I commend her courage and bravery.

“The Met is absolutely committed to bringing justice to victims of sexual assault, and to making women and girls feel safe in London.”
