Two men killed and another fighting for life after separate stabbing and shooting in south London
Police investigations continue after two men died and four people were injured in separate stabbing and shooting incidents during a horror morning of violence in London.
The Metropolitan Police rushed to East Street Market, off Walworth Road, on Sunday morning following reports of multiple stabbings.
Three people were found with injuries, and one man died at the scene.
Inquiries are ongoing to confirm his identity and inform his family, police said.
The two other victims - two men - were taken to hospital, where one remains in a critical condition.
A man in his 60s was “rapidly arrested” at the scene and remains in custody, police said.
The incident is understood to be mental health-related and police have confirmed it is not being treated as terrorism.
Officers are not seeking anyone else in connection with the attack but say their investigation is still in its early stages.
Meanwhile, police launched an urgent investigation following a triple shooting in Sydenham.
Officers rushed to Wells Park Road just after 10am on Sunday after reports of gunfire in the area.
A man was found with gunshot injuries and, despite the best efforts of paramedics, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Enquiries are ongoing to establish his identity and notify his family. A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.
A woman was also found with gunshot wounds to her legs. She was taken to hospital, where her condition is not considered life-threatening.
A third person later attended hospital with suspected gunshot injuries, and their condition is currently being assessed.
No arrests have been made.
The two incidents are not linked.
A shop worker said the alleged knife attacker in Walworth was challenged by market traders who “put him down” and then waited for police to arrive.
Wasim Hussain, who runs a shop near East Street Market told the PA news agency: “They just put him down, and they waited for the police.
“It was the general public – they work in the market, most of them.”
A father said he worries for the safety of his children after witnessing the aftermath of the stabbing.
Siraj, 46, who lives locally and did not wish to give her surname, was walking through East Street Market when he saw police cars and ambulances going past.
He followed them and found two injured people lying on the ground in the market.
“It was terrifying,” he said, adding he felt lucky the victims were not him or his children.
He added the area had “always been safe”, but now he was worried.
“I feel unsafe to send my kids to school now,” he said.
Commander Peter Stevens said: "I know people will be shocked by this senseless act of violence, all the more so on a Sunday morning in a residential area. I share their concerns and can assure the local community that the Met’s response, alongside our partners, has been rapid.
“We are determined to safeguard the community, to get to the bottom of what happened here and bring those responsible to justice.
“You will see a considerable number of additional officers in the area, including forensic experts. Police cordons are likely to remain in place for some time so that they can carry out their vital work.
“Officers will also be patrolling the area. I urge anyone with information to speak with those officers.
“A number of people have already contacted us, and we need that flow of information from anyone who saw or heard anything of note to continue. We also need to hear from anyone who has phone, CCTV or doorbell footage that may help the investigation.”
Any witnesses or anyone with footage or information is asked to call police on 101 or message via X @MetCC with reference number 2527/10nov. To remain anonymous, please contact the independent charity Crimestoppers.
