Man Leaves Car Window Open Overnight and Finds a Sloth Trying to Slowly Drive Vehicle the Next Day

After leaving his car windows open overnight, the man documented his adorable sloth encounter in a now-viral video

A driver in Brazil has discovered what it's really like to encounter a slowpoke behind the wheel.

Antônio Luiz Laghi of Manaus, Brazil, was getting ready to go to a doctor's appointment earlier this month, according to the Associated Press, when he entered his garage and came across an unlikely guest hanging off the steering wheel of his vehicle — a wild sloth!

The 73-year-old resident of the Ponta Negra neighborhood of Manaus then took out his phone and documented the silly moment, which has since gone viral on TikTok.

The post, shared by Laghi's son on Oct. 19, has already earned 1.4 million views and over 200,000 likes as of Thursday, Oct. 31. In the clip, the adorable mammal can be seen dangling from the steering wheel while Laghi laughs and gives viewers an up-close look at the sloth's shenanigans.

According to Laghi's son Bruno, his father left the windows of his car open the evening before to cool off, a decision that ultimately left him with an uninvited new pal in the driver's seat.

Even though the sloth ended up in a place it wasn't supposed to be, it was swiftly returned to its home. Since Laghi believed the sloth came from a nearby wooded area, he released the wild animal in the region. The doorman of his building stepped in to assist, returning the not-so-quick mammal to a location at the end of the street, per the AP.

Sloth lovers in the video's comment section also cracked a few jokes about the harmless carjacking, with one TikTok user writing in Portuguese, "Literally when you want to do something and laziness won't let you." Another commented, "How people from the United States think life is like for everyone here in Brazil."

While sloths may be cute, especially when randomly hanging on to the wheel of a car, the Sloth Conservation Foundation notes that wild sloths "do not crave or seek out human contact" and can potentially be dangerous to humans, "inflicting deep puncture wounds and even permanent nerve damage."

It's already been a pretty big few months for sloths, as just over two months ago, a sloth family at Zoo Atlanta welcomed a new little one.

As previously reported, a 7-year-old two-toed sloth named Nutella gave birth to a new baby on Aug. 9. The baby's father is a 31-year-old male two-toed sloth named Cocoa. The newborn sloth marked the pair's second baby together, as they previously welcomed baby Olivia on Father's Day 2023.

"We are very excited about the birth of Nutella's infant," Gina Ferrie, Zoo Atlanta's vice president of collections and conservation, said at the time. "Sloths have so many fascinating adaptations and behaviors that we can share with our Members and guests, and while they are not currently classified as endangered, they have an emerging conservation story that can help us appreciate the impact of human activities on wild animals and ecosystems."
