A MOTORIST was banned from the roads after being caught driving home from the pub - a journey of just 400 yards.

Arthur Wild got behind the wheel of a van after drinking in a social club near Mulberry Lane, Goring.

He was found to be slurring his words when officers stopped him at 7.50pm on July 5, but insisted he had only drunk two pints of beer.

Wild, 64, of Ardingly Drive in Goring, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

He tested for 48 micrograms (mcg) of alcohol per 100 millilitres (ml) of breath.

The legal limit is 35mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Police Constable Mark Gregory said: “Wild obviously thought he would get away with driving the short distance rather than simply walking home.

“He put himself and other road users at risk. He could have walked home, or he could have parked at home and walked to the social club. His poor decision has cost him his licence.”

“There is no excuse for drink or drug driving, and we are determined to catch offenders.”

Wild is disqualified from driving for one year. He was also hit a £120 fine, £85 court costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
