A driver parked over four spaces in a car park before defending the move with a provocative Facebook post.

The owner of a SEAT insisted he was in the right after a picture of his car taking up extra space was posted online.

The post of the parking outside a supermarket in Spalding, Lincolnshire, sparked a major debate online.

But its owner came forward on Facebook page Spotted Spalding and explained his reasoning behind the parking.

Fabio Silva wrote: “Start spending hundreds of pounds on your car and then you’ll understand where I’m coming from. Sorry for not wanting idiots ruining my pride and joy.”

Users urged the driver to "get a life" but others jumped to his defence calling him a "genius" for avoiding the sensors and therefore avoiding parking costs.

One user wrote: “Smart cookie! Not parked over a sensor, free parking all day!”

Another poster sympathised: “I know how you feel when someone caught my rear bumper it was silly money, people have no respect for other people’s cars…”

But while the driver received praise, many others took the chance to condemn the parking.

One user wrote: “Tell him to get better insurance. One that covers vandalism.

“My neighbour did mine on purpose and I ended up being a couple of grand better off.”

Another said: “And to think the person driving that car was the fasted swimmer! What a poor gene pool."
