A man is being quizzed by police after suspected shotgun cartridges were found in a property as neighbours were evacuated from their homes.

Police searched an address on West View Road, in Hartlepool, on Monday as part of enquiries and neighbours were evacuated as a precaution. Cleveland Police confirmed a man is being questioned on suspicion of possession of a class C drug and shotgun cartridges but stressed no firearms were discovered inside the address.

Officers remained at the scene throughout Monday night into Tuesday morning and have confirmed a 34-year-old man remains in custody on Tuesday. They said no further risk has been identified and all residents returned home on Tuesday morning.

In an updated statement Cleveland Police said: "A 34-year-old man remains in custody being questioned on suspicion of possession of a Class C drug and on suspicion of possession of ammunition (shotgun cartridges). We would like to thank the community for their understanding and co-operation whilst enquiries continue."

Residents reported two flats were evacuated and said police were stationed at the top of the street. They said a police car was parked outside a property while the incident was dealt with.
