Firefighters rescued a man from a flat following an early morning blaze. Two fire engines and paramedics were sent to the scene in Uttoxeter where smoke was spotted and an alarm had been sounding.

Firefighters used a ladder to access the Hamilton Avenue flat where a man in his 30s was helped from the property. Today Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service say the blaze, which was reported at 2.45am on Friday (January 24), was down to burning food in the kitchen.

Paramedics say the man was able to be discharged at the scene.

Station Manager Matthew Melland, who attended the scene, said: "More than 50 per cent of the fires we attend are caused by cooking. Distraction is the main cause of these fires, with pans and grills left to set alight after being left unsupervised. It’s really important that when preparing for mealtimes that we pay close attention to the food we are cooking and look when we cook."

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a fire at a private address on Hamilton Avenue. One ambulance attended the scene. Upon arrival we found a man who was assessed and was uninjured. He received self-care advice before being discharged at the scene.”
