Man rushed to hospital after stabbing as schools placed 'in lockdown'

A man has been rushed to hospital following a stabbing on a Greater Manchester street. Emergency services descended on Alexander Street in Tyldesley, Wigan, at 8.50am this morning (December 13).

The victim, a man in his 40s, was taken to hospital for treatment following the stabbing. A major cordon is currently in place at Alexander Street and New Bank Street, off Manchester Road.

Norris Street is also taped off. Eyewitnesses reported seeing paramedics and an air ambulance in the area earlier this morning. Police are hunting the knife attacker and enquiries are ongoing.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson added: "A scene has been established while officers conduct initial enquiries. Additional officers are in the area, if you have any concerns at all, please don't hesitate to speak to them."

At least two local schools have been reportedly placed into lockdown following the incident. Fred Longworth High School shared a message with parents, seen by the Manchester Evening News, confirming that students would not be allowed off site while the incident remained ongoing.

Nearby St George's Central CE Primary School, on Darlington Street, declined to comment to the M.E.N. following reports the school had also been placed into lockdown. Another cordon is also in place off Tyldesley Road, in Atherton, close to the McDonald's restaurant and around five minutes away from the scene by road.

It's not yet known whether the two cordons are linked. GMP has been approached for further details.
