A man who sexually, physically and psychologically abused a woman in front of her young son has been jailed for 18 years.

Craig Moran repeatedly attacked the victim over three days, leaving her with multiple injuries including a fractured leg.

The 34-year-old left the woman bleeding and unable to walk outside his flat in Rochdale, following what detectives called a “sickening” assault.

Greater Manchester Police said the abuse began on 8 February when Moran visited the woman’s home while her son was present and began drinking.

After attacking the victim, he stole some of her belongings and left.

When the woman went to Moran’s flat the next day to retrieve her possessions, he brutally beat her, told her she was going to die, and sexually assaulted her.

The victim suffered multiple injuries to her head, face, arms and legs.

A couple came to her aid after finding her seriously injured outside Moran’s flat two days later..

They took her to hospital, where she told a nurse about the abuse and the police were informed.

After Moran attempted to evade arrest, officers eventually located him in a neighbouring flat.

He later pleaded guilty to two counts of assault, sexual activity without consent, threats to kill, and breaching a restraining order.

Detective constable Russell Clarke said: “The sustained nature of this attack on the victim was sickening and included physical, sexual and psychological abuse.

"If it wasn’t for the kind and selfless actions of the couple who came to her aid, the victim, who was unable to walk, would likely have been stranded for some time and I would like to personally thank those people for the assistance they gave the victim that day.

“Without the bravery and strength of this victim, Moran would not have been brought to justice today. I would urge anyone out there who is suffering domestic violence of any kind to seek help, either from the police or approach their GP or nurse for help. You do not have to suffer in silence.”
