A man has been arrested after a victim was stabbed in the hand in front of horrified shoppers on a busy east London high street.

Police officers were called to Green Street, near Upton Park tube station, at 12.50pm on Saturday.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm while the male victim was taken to hospital.

It happened in front of shoppers outside Green Street Library, with huge crowds pictured at both ends of the police cordon as the victim was lifted into an ambulance.

Transport for London (TfL) was forced to divert five of its bus routes because of the incident.

It comes as the capital’s knife crime epidemic shows no sign of ceasing.

Between Friday and Saturday morning, three men in their 40s and 50s were stabbed to death in the space of 24 hours in Waltham Forest, Southwark and Lewisham.

And on Thursday evening, four young men were stabbed in the same incident in Camberwell’s Elmington Estate.
